Amenorrhea in Chinese Medicine

Over the years in my practice, I’ve had many patients coming in with amenorrhea. Most of them because of coming off the birth control pill, and wanting to conceive.

Acupuncture is fantastic to restore balance and flow (YES! Pun intended!) so it’s the perfect natural modality to use, to get a woman’s menstrual period back on track.

I think a common misconception (even among my students), is that if a woman has no period for a while, she must be blood deficient and probably iron deficient as well. This can be the case, but more often it’s not! For PCOS patients for example, it can be due to excess phlegm and damp creating stagnation.

That’s why I wanted to share with you the basic Chinese Medicine Treatment Protocol for Amenorrhea. So you can see all the different patterns (excess and deficiency) causing the period to stop.

Of course, it’s always important to form a TCM diagnosis for each patient in order to create a perfect treatment plan!

As always keep rocking it using TCM and let me know what you think in the comments below 🙂

Amenorrhea

  • Definition: absence of a  menstrual period for at least 3 consecutive months (ruling out pregnancy & right after childbirth) during a woman’s reproductive years, is defined as secondary amenorrhea; primary amenorrhea is when menarche (the onset of a first menstrual period) hasn’t occurred by 18 yrs of age.
  • Western Medicine: after stopping the Birth control Pill, a woman can take a few months to get her period back. Certain medications can stop a period (antidepressants, blood pressure drugs, chemotherapy, etc.).
Certain disorders associated with the endocrine system like hypothyroidism, or PCOS can also be the reasons. Hormone testing should be done to figure out the physiological cause.
  • TCM Causes: Emotional stress, Excessive exercise or mental work, weak Kidney Essence, Diet.
  • Tx options: Ear (endocrine, subcortex, reproductive, Lv, Sp, Kd); Seven-star (Dai meridian, Hua Tuo Jia Ji from T5 to lower sacrum).
