Ear Acupuncture for Digestive Disorders
Today, we’re diving into one of my all-time favourite microsystems: auricular therapy, also known as ear acupuncture.
If you’re anything like me, ear acupuncture wasn’t deeply covered during your TCM schooling. I remember learning a handful of points, flipping through multiple charts, and feeling confused about which system was “correct.” It left me uncertain about applying it confidently in clinic.
Fast forward years later — after countless courses, experimenting with different maps, and lots of clinical trial and error — I developed a simplified, structured, and highly practical approach to auricular therapy that truly works.
Today, we’re focusing specifically on ear acupuncture for digestive disorders, one of the most common concerns we see in practice.

Ear Acupuncture for Digestive Disorders
Why Ear Acupuncture Works So Well for Digestion
To understand why auricular therapy is so powerful for digestive disorders, we need to look at the brain–gut connection.
Modern science confirms what Chinese medicine has understood for centuries: the digestive system and the nervous system are deeply interconnected. The vagus nerve plays a central role, linking the brainstem to the stomach and intestines.
From a TCM perspective:
-
The Spleen governs transformation and transportation.
-
The Stomach receives and ripens food.
-
Emotional stress disrupts Liver qi, which then overacts on digestion.
When the nervous system is dysregulated — due to stress, trauma, anxiety, or emotional overload — digestive symptoms often appear. Calming the nervous system can significantly improve bloating, IBS, nausea, and irregular bowel movements.
And this is exactly where ear acupuncture shines.
The ear contains a microsystem that reflects the entire body, including the digestive organs and nervous system pathways. By stimulating specific auricular points, we can regulate autonomic function, calm stress responses, and support digestive harmony.
Common Digestive Disorders and Auricular Treatment Strategies
While point selection always depends on the individual pattern, here are foundational approaches I use regularly in clinic.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
IBS is rarely just digestive — it’s often stress-driven.
Start with nervous system regulators:
-
Shen Men
-
Sympathetic
-
Subcortex
Then palpate for tenderness along the Large Intestine, Small Intestine, Spleen, or Liver points. Tenderness guides precision. Let the ear tell you where the imbalance lies.
Nausea and Vomiting
These symptoms can stem from Stomach rebellion, anxiety, or acute stress.
Calming points:
-
Shen Men
-
Sympathetic
-
Subcortex
Then assess the Stomach point. If anxiety is clearly contributing, consider Heart and Liver auricular points to regulate emotional tension.
Constipation and Diarrhea
Again, begin with:
-
Shen Men
-
Sympathetic
-
Subcortex
Then palpate the Large Intestine, Spleen, and Liver areas. The tenderness will often reveal whether stagnation, deficiency, or stress is dominant.
Appetite Dysregulation and Cravings
For irregular eating patterns or cravings, I often combine:
-
Shen Men
-
Sympathetic
-
Hunger Point
-
Endocrine
This combination helps regulate stress-driven eating and supports hormonal balance.
Clinical Pearl: Always Palpate
One of the biggest mistakes I see practitioners make is selecting auricular points purely from charts without palpation.
Tenderness equals relevance.
The ear gives immediate feedback. When you palpate and your patient says, “That’s the spot,” you’re on the right track.
This approach removes guesswork and builds confidence.
Why I Created My Auricular Therapy Course
After years of feeling overwhelmed by conflicting ear maps and systems, I realized many practitioners were feeling the same way.
That’s why I created my online course: to simplify auricular therapy into a clear, structured, clinically applicable system.
Inside the course, you’ll learn:
-
How to confidently treat anxiety, cravings, pain, and digestive disorders
-
A simplified ear map system
-
Step-by-step treatment demonstrations
-
Real case studies
-
How to combine ear acupuncture with body acupuncture
There are seven modules, lifetime access, and continuing education credits available. I also include practical bonuses like:
-
A printable patient aftercare handout
-
A communication script
-
A quick-reference cheat sheet
My goal is simple: to help you feel confident using this beautiful microsystem in clinic.
Final Thoughts
Ear acupuncture is one of the most powerful, underutilized tools in Chinese medicine — especially for digestive disorders. By regulating the nervous system and supporting organ balance through this microsystem, we can achieve meaningful, lasting improvements for our patients.
If this resonates with you, I’d love to support you in mastering auricular therapy.
Right now it’s only $167 instead of $247. That price ends March 10 at 11:55 PM PST Save $80 – that’s 30% off.
