Show Notes

Thyroid disorders affect countless people worldwide, with many remaining undiagnosed or struggle to manage their symptoms efficiently.

In this episode, I was able to dive head-first into an enriching conversation with Dr. Jeda Boughton (a highly experienced Chinese Medicine doctor!) about her personal experience and professional insights into managing thyroid disorders through Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Unmasking Disorders with Dr. Jeda Boughton ๐Ÿฆ‹

Dr. Bowen’s journey to specializing in thyroid health started with her personal experience. She recounted her struggle with Graves’ Disease and then moved into hypothyroidism following a radioactive iodine ablation of the thyroid. Her personal journey with thyroid health led her to focus more on this area and support patients with thyroid conditions.

Traditionally, they are considered in two main categories: hyper and hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid is overactive, often resulting in rapid metabolism, heightened anxiety, and difficulty sleeping. Hypothyroidism, on the other hand, often includes fatigue, lethargy, and weight gain due to a slowed metabolism.

TCM Approach to Thyroid Disorders ๐Ÿ”‘

The TCM approach to thyroid disorders is not focused solely, but considers the person as a whole. It starts with diagnosing patterns; for instance, the common patterns for hypo and hyperthyroidism largely relate to heart and kidney disharmony. This disharmony is treated through a combination of acupuncture, herbs, and lifestyle changes.

Acupuncture and Herbs ๐ŸŒฟ

Acupuncture treatment involves a selection of numerous points around the body which help balance out the yin and yang. For instance, a technique such as choosing points like liver two, stomach 36, spleen 6 and DO 20 aids in balancing the upper heat and lower cold prevalent in thyroid disorders.

Chinese herbs supplement the acupuncture treatments, helping nourish the body and balance the yang energy. The herb Fuzi is a key player in the Chinese treatment for thyroid health. Prepared properly, Fuzi is a nourishing kidney tonic that helps manage body yang energy.</p>

Way to Better Thyroid Health ๐Ÿšต๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ

One key component to managing health is addressing lifestyle habits. Encouraging regular sleep patterns, mindful eating habits, incorporating more cooked vegetables into the diet, and practicing meditation or visualization techniques can reap considerable benefits to the patients.

The TCM approach is not just about treating individual symptoms, but about treating the person as a whole. Education and patient compliance play vital roles in success, especially in tackling chronic conditions.

These disorders are a prevalent issue in society. By embracing integrative and holistic treatment methods like TCM, we can better manage these conditions and improve overall health. The knowledge surrounding conditions continues to grow, bringing hope to the countless individuals living with these disorders.
