Exploring the Gene Keys with Claire Norman on The AcuPro Show Podcast

Take a deep breath. This episode of The AcuPro Show Podcast is a little different, a little deeper, and incredibly thought-provoking.

I recently had the pleasure of welcoming my dear friend and Gene Keys guide, Claire Norman, onto the show. If you’re unfamiliar with the Gene Keys, think of them as a contemplative system similar to Human Design or the Enneagram, but deeply rooted in the ancient wisdom of the I Ching and beautifully aligned with Chinese medicine philosophy.

This conversation felt expansive, reflective, and surprisingly practical for those of us working in the healing arts.

If you’re new here, welcome. I’m Clara Cohen, and my mission with The AcuPro Show is to make Chinese medicine and acupuncture approachable, inspiring, and clinically useful.

While many episodes focus on acupuncture techniques, diagnosis, or treatment strategies, I also believe that personal growth is professional growth. The better we understand ourselves, the better practitioners we become.

And that’s exactly why I was so excited to introduce Claire Norman.

Meeting Claire Norman: A Journey Into the Gene Keys

Claire and I have spent countless hours exploring the Gene Keys together. Sometimes three-hour coffee sessions focused on just one Gene Key. That’s how deep this system goes. It’s not something you skim. It’s something you contemplate.

Claire first encountered the Gene Keys during a personal healing journey involving Ayahuasca. At a time when she was seeking clarity and transformation, the Gene Keys offered language and structure for understanding her inner world.

The Gene Keys were written by Richard Rudd, who synthesized years of spiritual exploration and insight into a contemplative framework based on the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. Rather than being predictive, the Gene Keys are reflective. They invite you to observe your patterns, your shadows, and your gifts.

What Are the Gene Keys?

At their core, the Gene Keys are built upon 64 archetypes of consciousness. They mirror the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching, which dates back approximately 2,800 years.

Each Gene Key contains three frequencies:

  • Shadow – the unconscious pattern or reactive state

  • Gift – the higher expression of that pattern

  • Siddhi – the highest state of realization

For example, a shadow might manifest as doubt, conflict, or constriction. But within that shadow lies a gift — clarity, diplomacy, freedom, or creativity — waiting to be unlocked through awareness and contemplation.

For practitioners of Chinese medicine, this layered perspective may feel familiar. Just as we look for the root beneath the symptom, the Gene Keys look for the gift beneath the shadow.

My Personal Experience with the Gene Keys

Working with Claire on my own Gene Keys profile was eye-opening.

One of my shadows was “constriction.” That resonated deeply, especially because I value freedom so strongly. Seeing that pattern laid out helped me understand why certain situations trigger me — and how that same sensitivity, when transformed, can become a gift rather than a limitation.

This is what I love about the Gene Keys. They don’t label you. They illuminate you.

For me, it became less about fixing anything and more about observing myself with curiosity and compassion.

The Collective Impact: From Personal Growth to Community Healing

What struck me most in our conversation is how personal transformation ripples outward.

When we become more aware of our reactive patterns, we show up differently in our relationships — with partners, patients, colleagues, and communities. Claire shared how working with the Gene Keys transformed not only her inner world but also her external relationships.

As practitioners, this matters. The more grounded and self-aware we are, the safer and more effective we become in clinic.

The Gene Keys remind us that healing is not just physical — it’s energetic, emotional, and collective.

Why This Matters for Chinese Medicine Practitioners

Chinese medicine has always acknowledged layers of consciousness, spirit, and subtle energy. The Gene Keys offer another contemplative framework that complements this worldview.

For acupuncture students and practitioners, exploring something like the Gene Keys can:

  • Deepen self-awareness

  • Improve patient rapport

  • Strengthen emotional resilience

  • Enhance leadership and teaching abilities

  • Expand understanding of archetypal patterns

It’s not about replacing TCM philosophy, it’s about enriching it.

Takeaways and Next Steps

If this conversation sparks your curiosity, you can begin by generating your free Gene Keys profile on their official website. From there, the real work begins: contemplation.

This isn’t something you rush. It’s something you sit with.

Allow yourself space to reflect. Notice where certain themes feel activating. Observe how shadows show up in your life — and gently explore their gifts.

Growth isn’t about becoming someone new. It’s about remembering who you are underneath the noise.

Thank you for tuning in and exploring something a little different with me. Conversations like this remind me that healing is multidimensional, and that our evolution as practitioners is just as important as our clinical skills.

If Claire’s insights intrigue you, I encourage you to dive deeper and see what discoveries unfold.
